Psalm 29:2

Psalm 29:2

“Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.”

– Psalm 29:2

Main Thought: One of the things you see throughout the Psalms of David is his emphasis on the true worship of God. We see it also early in the history of Israel when God delivered His people out of Egypt and gave them His laws and precepts, that a very detailed emphasis was placed upon the true worship of God. The Tabernacle was the hub, at the center of the camp of the Israelites. It was known as a place of holiness, where God came down to meet with man. The Israelites understood that worship was not about them, but about God, worshiping Him because of His great name and holiness. David also understood this, that we worship Him because “His name alone is exalted; His majesty is above earth and heaven” (Ps. 148:13). As His children, we are commanded in His Word to worship Him, to not forsake the assembling of yourselves together (Heb. 10:25), not for the purpose of checking off a box of our religious service, not for the purpose of socializing with friends, or getting our felt needs addressed by the pastors and teachers. No, the purpose when we gather together is to worship, to worship in our praying, our singing, our giving, our serving, and in the proclamation of our God in the preaching and teaching of His Word. When we come together and worship Him in Spirit and Truth (John 4:23), we are doing what we were put on this earth to do, and which we will spend an eternity in heaven doing. May all of us who know our Lord and Savior say with David that we will worship our Lord who has redeemed us because of the glory of His name and in “the splendor of holiness.” I pray all of us who know Christ will have a renewed zeal to worship Him now and look forward to the time when we will live in eternal worship of our Lord and Savior.

– Psalm 30:4-5

Main thought: David opens this Psalm in the first three verses with adoration for God’s help and healing when he cried out to Him. In response to that, David admonishes the saints of God to sing praises to the name of the Lord and give thanks to Him. How often we neglect to praise and thank our Lord when we have cried out to Him for help in a crisis, or we have called upon Him for healing in an event of disease concerning ourselves or a loved one, and then God in His love and mercy helps deliver us and heals us.  In Psalm 34:1 he writes “I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Is there ever a lack of things for us to give praise and thanks to God for? Of course not, and as God’s children we are to be the most thankful of all people on this earth. We have been given eternal life and the promise of grace and mercy every day from our Father in heaven, so how can we not give thanks to His holy name? As David states here there are times of the anger of God, sometimes in His discipline of us when we are disobedient, but that anger in comparison to eternity “is but for a moment” and His favor is new and bountiful and abundant for every day as long as we live, and yes even beyond that into eternity for Jesus has promised that He has gone to prepare us a place and will return to take us to that place He has prepared (John 14:1-3). David reminds us that there will be weeping in this life from time to time, as we all know so well.  But that weeping will be temporary and will be replaced by the joy of the Lord in the morning. That is the promise Jesus gives us, that we shall have tribulation and trials and weeping in this world, but we have the joy of the Lord each day because of His Spirit that lives within every one of His children. And even beyond that, there will be a day when the morning dawns with the return of our Lord Jesus Christ and we will have eternal joy, and there will no longer be any weeping or sorrow. Child of God, praise and thank Him for his blessing today, and also for the promise of eternal life and joy when He returns.

Psalm 29:2

Psalm 4:7

“You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.”

– Psalm 4:7

Main Thought: We are reminded by David here that the source of real and true joy is our Lord. David points to what the worldly think will bring them satisfaction or joy, and that is the abundance of the things that they accumulate, in this case, grain and wine. But as we know from looking at the world around us and the history of mankind, what possessions or abundance a person has is never enough to bring lasting happiness and satisfaction. I am reminded of the words of Solomon, who possessed greater riches than any king of Israel’s history, but in Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 he writes “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes?” While the world does not understand the source of true satisfaction and joy, David points to the One who gives us joy and is the source of our joy. David credits God for giving him joy and causing him to continue with joy in his soul. In Psalm 16:11, David said that in God’s presence “there is fullness of joy” and in Psalm 43:4 he proclaimed that God is his “exceeding joy” As a child of God, we have been given joy in our souls by God that will last throughout our lives and into all eternity. It does not mean we will never feel sadness or pain, but we know the joy in our souls will never pass away because as God, the source of our joy is eternal, so is that joy. We can have every single earthly comfort taken away from us, but the world cannot take away our joy as a child of God. I am reminded of Paul and Silas, beaten with rods and having many blows inflicted upon them, then thrown into a Philippian jail, in the blackness of night and a prison cell breaking out in singing hymns to God (Acts 16). What was the source of their praises and singing? It was the joy of the Lord that caused their praises; our Lord, the source of eternal joy, was their possession and not the things of this world. This reassures us that we will have joy from praising God in every situation of life and the greater the burden, the more joy our God supplies us with. Do not look enviously upon those with more in this world, as if that gives them lasting joy. No, understand that the joy that God gives exceeds every joy of this world and it is a joy that will never end.

“Let your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to your promise; then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word.”

– Psalm 119:41-42

Main Thought: One of the great assurances we have of our salvation is the many promises of God in His Word. In the Psalm here, David speaks of that promise. Very often, we need to go to the promises found in God’s Word concerning our salvation when we are going through trials and testing. Those promises remind us that God has given us His Word and our salvation will stand the test of time and eternity, no matter what the tribulation we are going through or perhaps sometimes even the doubt in our minds that comes with the testing of our faith. One of the great statements of David is found in Psalm 27:1 where he writes “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” How can we fear the loss of our salvation when we know that the Lord, who is my salvation, holds that salvation in the very palm of His omnipotent hand? The apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:31: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” and then says “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine…” (Romans 8:35). Then after going through a whole list of those things that test our faith, says that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39). David knew that his salvation did not rest in his own ability, but that it rested in the promises and power of the God who loved Him. David knew the treachery of the broken promises of men, but he also knew by faith that the promises God made to Him were steadfast and sure, never to be broken. I am reminded of Jesus’ words to the apostles, knowing what was about to come and knowing that their faith would be tested, told them in John 16:33: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Did Jesus demonstrate his overcoming of the world? Yes, when he overcame death and the grave, demonstrating to them that not even death could overcome His love for them and His promises to them. Perhaps you are going through a trial of your faith; perhaps you have been forsaken by friends or family, or maybe you are having a crisis of health. David had known such trials, but in the midst of those things he knew the promise of God’s salvation. Today, do not listen to the taunters, do not even listen to the doubts of your own mind, but listen to the promises of God’s Word regarding your salvation.

“All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name.”

Psalm 86:9

Main Thought: In this verse of Psalm 86, David is reminding us and all who will ever read this, that it is not men or governments that make nations and determine their power or success, but it is the Lord who has made them. They did not come into existence of their own will and power, but God brings nations into existence and places of prominence. At the same time, God brings those same nations back down, usually because they have lifted themselves up in pride and have forsaken and forgotten the Lord who created them. In Daniel 4, we have recounted the story of how King Nebuchadnezzar was lifted up in pride and declared how he had made Babylon great by his own power (Daniel 4:30). In a moment, God took his reason and his kingdom from him, and made him like a beast of the field for a time. When God brought him out of this time of madness, he lifted his eyes to the heavens and praised God “who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation….and he does according to his will among the host of heaven…and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?'” (Daniel 4:34-36). Nations and leaders may deny and not worship the God who created them now, but David makes it plain that one day all the nations and their rulers will come and bow their knees and worship the Lord and glorify His name. Our call as believers in Christ is to call all men and nations to acknowledge Him, worship, and glorify Him now in humble adoration as long as we have breath. In Psalm 2:12, David reminds us to “kiss the Son, lest he be angry…Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.” Oh, what a wonderful thought it is for the believer in Christ, the ones who have kissed the Son, that this One who saved us and now rules our hearts and lives and we worship and glorify, will be the object of our eternal worship because our refuge is in Him. Lift high His holy and glorious name for now and forevermore and worship Him!
